[Moray Eel With A Cleaner Shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/mecswpb/) - Subject Green Moray Eel with a Cleaner Shrimp Location West Palm Beach, Florida Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 20 meters (65 feet at depth) during a drift day dive West Palm Beach, Florida has some of the best diving in the United States. Boat dives drop you off and you dive, dive, dive….. You need to drop when you hit the water and follow the group because of the current. This is called a negative entry. When I was getting into the water on negative entries, I like following everyone because more eyes will give you more opportunities to see something unique. I like to be in the middle of the pack. That way if you see something really good, you don’t have to worry you are losing everyone as you take photographs. I remember seeing a shark in the distance and some small rays and other fish swimming right up on you but this moray eel was special. This eel knew where to go, to get his skin clean. He was on a cleaning station, where some eels were enjoying shrimps “cleaning off” their skin of parasites. The shrimps would stay in little crevices and this eel was hiding in one of the rocks peeking his head out. I was taking photos of him and noticed the shrimp wanted to get near the camera. This shrimp stopped to take the time for a photo and then went back to cleaning the eel. I quickly took this shot because I didn’t want to get left behind the rest of the group. Overall, this dive group was patient and was not in a race. As a photographer, I was eternally grateful. Currents with dives out in West Palm Beach can be strong so I was fortunate I was able to get under some rocks to photograph this interaction. - [Green Moray Eel In West Palm Beach, FL](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ewpb1/) - Subject Green Moray Eel Location West Palm Beach, Florida Equipment Canon camera with dual inon strobes Dive 19 meters (62 feet at depth) during a day drift dive When I diving with a group, I always want to start in the front of the pack. This way when I see something good to take photos of, I am never losing the group. I was locked on trying to get a photo of a small sting ray when I saw the group stopping not too far in front of me. I thought to myself if they are all congregating around one area, it has to be good. As I approached the area, I was surprised that there were 3 big green moray eels in close proximity of one another. I tried to get close to two of them but they were not having it. They would retreat back into the rocks if I got too close. I kept going because I didn’t want to get left behind. Then I noticed I was coming up on something that was peeking out of the rocks and other divers were checking it out. It was just ahead of me. This would be 4 big green morays on one dive. This is not typical and was very surprised to see one, yet alone four. I was able to get very close to this one before he retreated into the rocks. Some eels will have nothing to do with you and others will have no fear. I got about 3-6 inches from this one when I took this shot. Eels get a bad reputation because they are always exposing their teeth, but they have to open their mouths to breathe. They have to orally pump water thru their gills. This makes them look much more intimidating than what they really are. Green moray eels make for great photos when they want to be in front of the camera. - [Flamboyant Cuttlefish In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/fcoj1/) - Subject Flamboyant Cuttlefish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes with red light, +6 wet lens Dive 10 meters (33 feet) during a night dive When I was in diving in Okinawa, Flamboyant Cuttlefish were not that common to see but certain times of the year, they would come out. I believe in the later fall going into winter, the Flamboyant Cuttlefish would come out in numbers where you could see four or five in one dive. This was only exclusive to certain spots of Okinawa, of course. I primarily dove on the west coast of Okinawa. This area had easier access points to water for divers and the current was more predictable. Flamboyant Cuttlefish were primarily nocturnal here. When I went out on night dives, I would wait to get into the water about an hour after dark. I wanted to wait for them to start hunting and moving around before I started to get into the water. Getting to the dive spots with my dive partner when the sun was just setting gave us just the right amount of time to get our gear on and start our entry. I would notice flamboyant cuttlefish near rock formations and very rarely out in the open ocean and just walking on the sand. When I would spot one, I would quickly move to red light. This helped me get closer to them without scaring them away. They could still feel your presence with the red light because they would start changing colors. They were warning you to stay away. This is when you wanted to take the shot. Just when you were inches away, they displayed all kinds of bright colors. This one looked like an orchid or bright flower. You could stay with flamboyant cuttlefish for several minutes if you kept your red light on. - [Japanese Reef Squid At Night](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/jrsp1/) - Subject Japanese Reef Squid Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 10 meters (32 feet at depth) during a night dive It was the end of a long night dive. Japanese fishermen were on the shore sitting up on the rocks with their huge fishing poles. They were trying to catch what the deep water brings to the shallows at night. The sky was black as night, and I was ready to swim back after a good night dive. Then my dive buddy started waving his dive light towards me, he saw something good. Our cameras were running low on battery, but I knew it had to be something different, something rare. I turned off my camera to save battery life. When I followed him, I saw a large Japanese Reef Squid darting around. I knew as soon as I saw it, it was a squid we have never encountered before. This Japanese Reef Squid was almost three feet long. I knew from previous experience that squid respond to white light much better than red light. Reef squid stop for white light and will take off when they see red light. This is completely the opposite of everything else you see during a night dive. The white light managed to keep the squid’s curiosity and I was able to get a couple of shots while he changed color. As my dive buddy stayed in the same location, I followed the squid. The depth was shallow, but my air was running low, and the squid was moving away from shore. I kept up with him to get this shot but I knew I was much further out, than I wanted to go. I was out by myself in the black water. I slowly ascended and followed the lights from the city back to shore. - [Grouper With A Cleaner Shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/rgb1/) - Subject Grouper with a Cleaner Shrimp Location Bali, Indonesia Equipment Canon with dual inon strobes Dive 12 meters (39 feet at depth) during a day dive In Bali, you will look down the beach and see miles of black sand and river rocks. Even though the beach looks the same, underwater the landscapes change dramatically. You could be on huge boat reef in once section of beach and another a cleaning station. A cleaning station is where fish go to get parasites off them. There are shrimps and little fish that pick off the parasites from larger fish. This gives them the food they need, while the larger fish have cleaner, healthier skin. The fish will stop swimming and rest near rocks for shrimps and little fish to hop on and peck off parasites. This red grouper would stretch out his gills so the shrimps could get in all, the “hard to reach” spots. While the grouper was stretching out his mouth and gills, he was keeping his eyes on me. I suppose he wanted to see what I was up to. Most of the fish at the cleaning station didn’t seem to mind me taking photos of them. They were more concerned with what they were doing there. I stayed with this grouper for an hour to get an opportunity for him to open his mouth. I didn’t know he was going to open his mouth, I just felt like something was going to happen. It was almost like the grouper and shrimp knew they were going to do something cool for the camera. They did not disappoint. My dive guide was very patient with me and waited. The guides in Bali are amazing and have the best vision, to pick out the best potential images. Every time I go to Bali, we always go to the cleaning station. - [Spotted Octopus In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/sooj/) - Subject Spotted Octopus Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes with red light Dive 9 meters (30 feet in depth) during night dive Night diving can be some of the best diving you will ever do. I would have two bright lights always on, to open up the darkness of the water. It gave me a little security in seeing a little of ahead of me so nothing really surprised me. I would have another hand held light just in case, on standby. With my main lights, I would have red caps, I would put on when I wanted to get close and take pictures. The area I was diving this night was an inlet from the deep ocean. What made this dive site special, is you never knew what was coming in from the deep at night. The dive would start about 30 minutes after the sun set. You didn’t want to get in too soon because nothing was out yet. Almost everything that was going to be out was swimming or hunting for food within the first hour of the dive. Normally night dives were so shallow you could be in the water close to 120 minutes. My dive buddy and me really didn’t start getting into the zone of photography until about an hour into the dive and then it felt like all the ocean life was out. I was on way back from a dive and this Spotted Octopus was sitting in the sand. The octopus was about three feet long and was very curious. I think it had a hard time making out what I was doing there. His skin would get dramatically dark and then flash red. I have never seen this octopus during the day. This was the first and last time I saw it in this location. - [Octopus All Wrapped Up](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ooj1/) - Subject Octopus Location Kerama Island, Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual ion strobes Dive 16 meters (52 feet at depth) during a day dive Octopus will show different colors, but it is rare to see the tentacles all wrapped up around his body. I have only seen it a handful of times and only got it on camera twice. Shooting below an Octopus is ideal so you can see the water behind them. This gives the picture some depth. I was lucky enough for him to cooperate enough, so I had that angle and time to get into position. The sun can change how much light you need from your strobes. The sun can be out and bright and then clouds come rolling in. This can affect your image color if you are shallow. At depth it can make some impact. The lighting, shutter speed, ISO and aperture are the keys to good images. The shutter speed is your dimmer, how much light you allow into the image. ISO is the camera’s ability to brighten the image with no light. Aperture is the window that allows light when taking the picture. A higher aperture number on your camera is a smaller window. When I am taking a picture of an octopus like this, I have shutter speed adjusted based on how close I am to the surface and how bright the water is. I tried to keep the ISO under 250 and my aperture for this octopus was at mid-range. The only exception to this is when I am shooting very small octopus. The bigger the octopus the more I have to open up the aperture, to allow more light, into the camera because I am further away from the subject. I had to keep thinking about these adjustments while shooting this octopus because the light was changing with the sun and the octopus was moving. This octopus was about done with me, and this dive was almost coming to an end when I took this shot. - [Juvenile Cuttlefish Showing Off Some Color](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/coj2/) - Subject Juvenile Cuttlefish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon camera, dual inon strobes, +6 wet lens Dive 6 meters (20 feet at depth) during day dive There are dives when the visibility is not that great, and you cannot find a lot to take photos of. Then you find something rare, and it makes the dive worth it. This was one of those dives. I was diving for about 30 minutes with low visibility. The water was all churned up from storms. Rainwater off the island had made the water murky. Taking photos from a distance was not an option. I had to find a macro shot to close down the working distance from the camera to the subject. I decided I wanted to take another route than I normally do, and I noticed something hovering over a piece of hard coral. As I got close, I noticed this was a juvenile cuttlefish. This tiny cuttlefish was perfect for these conditions. This cuttlefish was about 4 inches long and felt secure on top, of this one piece of coral. This was the first and last juvenile I had ever seen. I have seen newborns and full-sized adults, but I never saw a juvenile. You could tell the cuttlefish was nervous and did not know what to make of me. Once he saw I was not a threat and just wanted to take pictures, he let down his guard and I was able to spend about 40 minutes with him. He had great color and was very healthy. I tried to get him to hover higher off the coral so I could get a black background with just water surrounding him. He was very photogenic. That was the only subject I saw that dive. A one of a kind, that I never saw again. - [Cuttlefish In The Dark In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/coj1/) - Subject Cuttlefish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon camera with dual inon strobes Dive 8 meters (24 feet at depth) during a dusk dive I would sometimes dive right outside my house when I lived in Okinawa, Japan. The entire area was completely untouched and there were spots where no diver had ever been. I found a huge piece of coral that was a breeding ground for broadclub cuttlefish. They would mate and place their eggs into the coral not that far from the shoreline. Instinct drove them every year at the same time to lay their eggs. The females would be guarded very heavily by the males as they placed the eggs into the coral. It was getting dark and at the time I didn’t have much experience doing night dives, so I was a little nervous. I noticed a little female coming near the coral. Once she sized me up and realized I wasn’t a threat, she would come near me. I was close enough to get this shot as the sun was setting. I was below the cuttlefish and the only thing that was around us was water. The light from the strobes was bouncing off the water and this gave the black background effect you see in the image. You could tell the cuttlefish was very hesitant to get near me but she needed to lay her eggs in the coral. I was in a stand-off for about 35 minutes before she felt comfortable with me to get about 5 inches from my camera. I have found keeping eye contact with them and approaching them very slowly is the only way, you will get a good photo. You have to build trust and that can take 30-45 minutes. I was running low on air when I took the shot and was thankful for what I had seen, waved goodbye, and drifted into shore. - [Gray Angel Fish In West Palm Beach, FL](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gawpbf/) - Subject Gray Angel Fish Location West Palm Beach, Florida Equipment Canon Camera, dual inon strobes Dive 19 meters (62 feet at depth) during a drift dive Gray Angel Fish will always come by at least once and check you out. You just have to be looking in their direction when they come by to get the shot. I could not tell you how many times I was looking at something else and a Gray Angel comes inches from you. You tell yourself, that would have been a great shot! Every photographer has an underwater story of missed opportunities. These are sometimes, mistakes with the camera, or just a lack of awareness. No matter, you learn and dive again. Gray Angel fish love to sneak up on you. In this photo I was aware of this one in the rocks and he was not sneaking up on me. This Gray Angel was hiding from the current next to a small ledge. I was able to stay with the current and take this shot as I drifted by. I like this image because there is some background with the rock but you have the black too to help emphasize the fish. Almost all ocean life looks like they are floating slowly in the water. You realize how fast they can move or how fast they are moving, when you try to keep up with them. Take what you can get and move on. I tried to swim or catch up with sea life before and I just wasted a lot of air. You have to take what the ocean gives you. Nothing more will come if you try to force it. Some dives you will have everything and others you will just be blowing bubbles. If you are in the right spots for the most part, there will always be something to see. - [Sexy Shrimp In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ssoj1/) - Subject Sexy Shrimp Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes, +6 wet lens Dive 11 meters (36 feet at depth) during a day dive Macro photography is producing images larger than they are, at life size. To get an image that is only a couple centimeters in length to come life, in a photo, is fulfilling. The Squat or Sexy Shrimp as used by their common names can be tough to photograph because of their small size and movement. To truly get the detail of the image the shrimp has to cooperate by not moving at all and you have to get inches from the subject. I have seen collections of them on one anemone, in other parts of the pacific. I have also seen some of them so small you can hardly get them in focus. It was one of those dives where I was having a hard time seeing anything good. I had to remind myself to slow down. Swim slower and relax your mind. You have to slow down physically and mentally when you are looking for very small animals to take photos of. I would say this sexy shrimp was on the larger size. It was almost ½ inch (1 cm). Getting really tack sharp images of small animals is tough but when they come out it, it feels great. The shrimp was in a bubble coral. Bubble coral though very soft during the day when fully extended, will retract at night into the hard bone of the coral. The bubble texture is soft like a balloon but has tenacles at night that come out that can sting predators. The sexy shrimp helps keep the bubble coral clean while the coral provides protection to the shrimp. This symbiotic relationship is common with clownfish, anemones, crabs and other shrimps alike. - [Octopus Stretched Out](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ooj2/) - Subject Octopus Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 19 meters (62 feet at depth) during a dusk dive I really wanted to get into the water before it got dark out right before Thanksgiving. Looking at the weather forecast, I knew this was going to be my last chance to get into the water for a couple weeks. The currents and tides change this time of year in Japan. The weather can be a little rough but today it was still calm. The sun was going to set soon, so I got in my car and got into the water with two hours of sunlight left. I was diving my favorite spot. Maeda Point. An easy dive when tides are calm. I would dive down a shallow trench where a long metal chain was and turned to the right. The reef and rock would be on my right side the entire dive with open water to my left. I normally would stop before the second ledge, but something told me to keep going. I went passed the ledge and was looking at the rocks and reef when an octopus came out of nowhere swimming right over my head. It completely shocked me. It was as though the octopus wanted me to see him. He showed off his colors and hunting techniques for a long time. I followed him for 30 minutes. He was hunting and moving all over the rocks on this volcanic cliff. In this shot I was able to get him fully extended. I have never been able to get another shot like this again. It was a special dive with just the octopus and I. After his hunt was over, it was time for me to get out. I could feel the tide changing and knew that the weather was telling me my time was up. - [Australian Sea Lion Looking At You](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/asl1/) - Subject Australian Sea Lion Location Neptune Islands, Southern Australia Equipment Canon camera with dual inon strobes with a wide-angle lens Dive 10 meters (32 feet at depth) during a day dive Neptune Islands is known for their Great White Sharks. I was nervous about this trip. This was my first liveaboard and first time seeing Great Whites. I had only read about doing this and didn’t know anyone on the trip. It was a long trip with 4 connecting flights but once I got down there, I fell in love with Australia. It was very clean and everyone was very nice. I quickly made friends and most of my mates on the 76 foot vessel were from Australia but some were from New Zealand and one nice couple from England. The trip was only for 4 days and the seas were rough the first day. Could not see anything. The second day was good and saw some white pointers. I did not realize on the last day, on the way back, we were going to be able to swim with sea lions. The Australian Sea Lion is a threatened species. The government has restrictions on how long you can be with them. So, in the protective cove where they were located, you only had one hour to dive with them. I had to make it count. We would get our gear on and make our way to the sea lions in raft boats. We would do a reverse entry into the water and get set up for some shots. The sea lions came right up to you and were very friendly. You could never keep up with their agility and speed, but I knew they liked my dome. They could see their reflection in it. This one was very curious and would put his nose right up to it. He stayed with me for a minute or so, then took off with his friends. - [Green Sea Turtle Posing For The Camera In The Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gspt4/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Apo Island, Dumaguete, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, with dual inon strobes, wide-angle lens Dive 7 meters (23 feet at depth) during a day dive This was my second time in Dumaguete so I had a better plan on what I wanted to accomplish. I wanted to dive Apo Island in the shallows at least once, just to get close to sea turtles. Circling the island for another dive, to approach the huge coral was also on the list. When you are diving in these situations you really don’t know how it is going to play out. You just want to feel confident that what you are doing, is going to put you in the best situation, to get the photos you want. I was looking for turtles when my guide indicated a large one was right around the coral ahead. He was resting on the ocean floor near a soft coral. I wanted to get ahead of him so he would look up at me. I swam further out and approached him from a conservative distance. The cautious approach gave me confidence I could gain his trust. As I got closer, he wasn’t sure what to do, and started to move around. I was afraid I was going to miss my opportunity. I slowed down and then made another longer pass towards him. This time he didn’t move at all. Finally, this turtle was comfortable with the space I gave him, and he gave me about 10-15 seconds to take several shots. The seconds felt like minutes and when you look back on it, it feels much longer. The turtle was several hundred pounds and was almost 4 feet in length. I was able to spend a lot of time with several turtles that day. It was a great experience and I think they enjoyed the opportunity to be with me, too. - [A Green Sea Turtle With Two Divers In Apo Island, Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gspt5/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle with Divers Location Apo Island, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, dual inon strobes, with wide angle lens Dive 5 meters (16 feet at depth) during day dive To get to the best dive locations, you have to fly a lot of miles and carry a lot of camera equipment. So, picking where you are put your time and money has to be strategic. The Dauin area has diving for all kinds of divers. Apo Island is great for wide-angle for coral landscapes and turtles. On nearby shorelines, macro photography is a great for small creatures. So, in this area you can kill two birds with one stone. When I first got to the resort, I wanted to plan the week and what I wanted to do. I wanted to see what days we could get over to Apo Island and see what other days would bring with, macro photography. When the boat was scheduled to go to Apo Island there was not very many divers on the boat and so I had plenty of room for my camera and gear. The water was crystal clear all week at Apo Island and my guide knew I wanted to spend just a day taking photos of green sea turtles. This special trip to this tiny island that inhabits less than 750 people, was only 35 minutes away. The marine reserve was great to get up and close to sea turtles. The dive guides are vigilant and monitor you for your safety. This image was not timed and just happened, with a dive guide and diver just swimming by. Initially I did not like the divers in the photo, but I now believe having the divers in the picture adds some depth to the image. Sometimes when something happens that quickly, you just have to believe, maybe it was meant to be. - [Clownfish Making A Quick Turn In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cfj4/) - Subject Two Clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon camera dual inon strobes Dive 16 meters (52 feet at depth) during a day dive Clownfish can be difficult to take photos because they are constantly moving. But a lot of the time they are moving in a pattern. You can time up that pattern to get good shots. It takes some getting used to but after a while you see them slowing down. Sometimes they just don’t want to come out and then you know you have to move on. It can be hit or miss but these two gave me a shot or two, swimming in a pattern where the water was clear and warm. Right down the street from a Japanese village I lived in, there was a marine sanctuary that was off limits to spear fisherman and fishing. The fish were used to divers here and they would come right up to you. There was so much to see, it was easy to pass things by. Every time I knew we were going to have great weather I would get up at 6 am to be prepared for diving. I would have my gear already in the car and my camera all setup. I would get down to the marine sanctuary when the gate opened. I wanted to be one of the first to hit the water. You never want to be diving and you see more bubbles than fish. That means too many dives are in the water. I always knew if I was there very early, there would always be a chance for some great encounters. Besides the parking lot would be packed, by noon and you could not get a parking spot. I liked getting my second dive in by noon so I could get home and sleep. I had to be ready for night diving that evening. - [Manatee Bubbles](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/mbbf/) - Subject Manatee Location Homosassa Springs, Florida Equipment Canon Camera with wide angle lens, nature a light Dive 1 meter (3 feet deep at depth) when taking the shot When shooting manatees, you have to use the sun to your advantage because you are not allowed to use strobes. As a general rule have the sun back to you and subject in front of you. This principle never changes but the sun moves as the day moves along so you have to reposition where you are. So, when taking pictures of manatees, you have to factor not only the positioning of the manatee but how the light is hitting the subject. The manatees can very friendly and want to play and spend all kinds of time with you. Other times they will just swim away fast. It was a day where it was difficult to find a cooperative manatee. My boat guide was able to spot one near a boat dock. She was sitting under a dock and needed to come up for some air eventually. Most of time you can only snorkel with manatees. So, I patiently waited until she started to dart to the surface. This manatee was almost ten feet long and a thousand pounds. I knew in my mind that the manatee was harmless but an animal that size coming right at you is intimidating. With a wide angle lens a lot of times, people don’t realize how close you have to get to fill the frame. If you don’t get 6 inches from your subject, the image could look like it is ten feet away. Needless to say, my heart was beating fast when this manatee came rushing up to the surface. The bubbles from the nose showed a nice touch of personality. I was fortunate, to be in the right position at the right time. - [Manatee Reflection](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/mrf1/) - Subject Manatee Location Homosassa Springs, Florida Equipment Canon Camera with wide angle lens with nature light Dive 2 meters (6 feet of water at depth) during the day When shooting with natural light only, you want the sun behind you and the subject in front you. The strobes of a camera are not good for the eyes of the manatees, so you have to use the sun to your advantage. Manatees do not usually swim in deeper water because they cannot equalize their ears. That is why you will always see them in the shallows. The only natural predators to manatees are humans. Reckless propellors from boats are usually the offenders, giving injuries or death to manatees. Safe boating practices can be maintained by following the signs for slowing down in no wake zones and manatee zones. This manatee was sitting on the bottom of a shallow river when it decided it needed to come up for air. The reflection off water was possible because the water surface was so flat. The river also did not have any sediment kicked up and it made for great conditions. The sun was coming out of the clouds behind me which helped act as natural strobe for this image. I opened up the aperture and shutter speeds to brighten the image on the camera right before I took the shot. This manatee was very friendly and came right up to me after it took a breath of air. Manatees are driven to the rivers when the ocean temperatures drop. They need to stay in water that is greater than 68 degrees Fahrenheit (20 degrees Celsius) in order to avoid hypothermia. November to March is usually when you see the manatees in the rivers north of Tampa, Florida. When the temperature goes back up, they then go out to the Gulf of Mexico where they feed on sea grass. - [Coconut Octopus Glowing In The Shell](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ois1/) - Subject Coconut Octopus Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera with single inon strobe with retra snoot Dive 16 meters (52 feet at depth) during a day dive The Coconut Octopus is very unique in the fact that it feels most at home in shells. It uses shells for protection and have been known to carry them as they walk across the sand. This octopus was wrapping himself in the shell when I was getting ready to take a photo. I was using a retra snoot to take the photo. A snoot is a device that eliminates a section of light that comes thru the strobe. Think of how an actor is on stage and the spot light comes down on them. This what a snoot does to an image underwater. The retra snoot has different masks you can insert for more creative ways to bend light. You can close down the spot light so there is just a slight bit of light coming thru, to make the image more pronounced. In this case, the snoot was attached to the end of the strobe and was locked into position so it didn’t come off. The snoot and strobe were pointing at a slight angle above the octopus. This enabled the shell to glow while getting the octopus in frame. The little bit of light that came thru the retra snoot was able to emphasize shadows with the image and eliminated the background completely. This octopus was very cooperative and acted like he wanted the photo. It was pretty cool to see him in action. I was pleased with getting this image in focus while still getting the light to play off the shell. Snoots are great but you have to have a subject that stays still and is a willing participate. - [Looking Up At An Octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ooj3/) - Subject Octopus Location Kerama Islands, Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 15 meters (49 feet at depth) during a day dive Octopus can be hit or miss. Sometimes you see one and they want nothing to do with you. And sometimes they are around for one or two shots, and they are gone. But then you have those brief moments where they want to stay with you for the whole dive. This was the case for this curious octopus. He really enjoyed the camera and the company of divers. He was with our diving party for almost 45 minutes. He would follow us around and pose for the camera. At the time I didn’t realize how rare that was but after logging hundreds of hours underwater, you begin to appreciate moments like this a little more. The octopus spend the majority of his time moving around the bottom, so it wasn’t until I was with him for 35 minutes, I saw my opportunity to shoot this image where I was well below him. I was able to expose the water behind him to create depth. The bright blue with the color contrasts of the octopus brought out his colors. With his eyes and body turned towards me you can see the whole octopus. He was not shy to show himself and you could tell he was confident. I had to open the aperture on the camera to all more light in so the image would not be too dark. This also helped the background open up. Having two strobes on the octopus helped keep the light balanced on both sides to make a strong portrait. The octopus took this position for what seemed several minutes. In reality it was probably 30 seconds. Time and space always seem to slow down when you care capturing moments. - [Caribbean Reef Octopus In West Palm Beach, FL](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cof1/) - Subject Caribbean Octopus Location West Palm Beach, Florida Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes, +6 wet lens Dive 9 meters (30 feet at depth), during a day dive I had been back in the United States for several months and I had not done one dive. Getting adjusted from living in Japan for almost 7 years was a transition to say the least. I decided that I needed to get back in the water and I knew that the Blue Heron Bridge was not that far away. I had heard that it was a great macro photography site so I was excited to get the camera back in action. The guide decided that it was best to go to the east side of the bridge due to the tide and conditions. I wanted to capture as many creatures as possible on camera. But I had no idea what to expect. I had been diving in the Pacific my entire diving career. I was surprised the Bridge resembled some of what I had captured in the Pacific. There was a concentration of a lot different ocean life in a small area. Seeing an octopus was a pleasant surprise. The octopus was maybe five inches in length and was very active. This octopus was coming in out of rocks and debris, when I put on my wet lens to get more detail of the image. I did not have time to zoom in and I am glad I didn’t. I was very happy with the round effect from the wet lens. It gave the image a different perspective. I took advantage of this little guy for about 3 minutes, moving in and out of the terrain. Shortly then after, he was gone, and I was able to get under the bridge and explore. - [Two Gobies In A Bottle](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ygbp1/) - Subject Two Gobies in a Bottle Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, with one inon strobe with a retra snoot, +12 wet lens Dive 17 meters (55 feet in depth) during a day dive I had seen gobies in a bottle on the previous dive, but my experience getting shots of them was limited. Just the day before I was using my retra snoot and was thinking about shooting the gobies with it. A snoot is a light shaping device to help bring attention to smaller subjects by just having a fraction of the light on a subject, than what a regular strobe would produce. These gobies are less than an inch long and loved their little home to this glass bottle. I was obsessed with getting this shot. I told the dive guide to leave me next to the gobies for the entire dive. I laid in front of that bottle for an hour waiting for the right moment for these gobies to come out. I knew I would be good on the air because I didn’t move at all the entire dive. At first, I was too close to the bottle. It took me 15 minutes to figure this out. When I moved back about 8 inches that is when I knew I was in the right spot. The gobies came out for me almost right away. I think these gobies had a lot of personality and for both of them to be in the shot, was really fitting. The picture represents the colors, textures and personalities of these guys. The light shaping device, the retra snoot, attached to my strobe emitted a fraction of the light to showcase the gobies faces. The wet lens helped magnify the image and sharpen the clarity of their eyes. The diameter of the glass bottle opening was about 1 inch. - [Green Sea Turtle Coming Up For Air](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gspt6/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Apo Island, Dumaguete, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, with dual inon strobes, wide angle lens Dive 6 meters (20 feet at depth) during a day dive The great thing about Dumaguete for diving is that you can shoot macro photography during one part of the day and then dive at Apo Island in the afternoon. From the resort you are only a 20-minute boat ride to Apo Island and the huge green sea turtles. The boat had a freshwater soaking station on it. This was for the camera. The saltwater wears down the camera so bathing it in freshwater as soon as you get it out of the ocean is imperative for a camera’s longevity. To take advantage of the size of the turtles I used a wide-angle lens. The dome that I have on my cameras allows you to get very close to a subject without losing any of the animal in the picture. What a lot of people don’t understand is how close you have to get to a subject so the turtle does not look like it is 20 feet away. I have found being 12 inches (30 cm) from the subject is the best distance. If you can get closer, great! The closer the better. You just don’t want to stress out the animal you are shooting. You can judge what is a tolerable working distance with the turtles by seeing how they react to your approach. The turtles slept in the coral and if you approached them slowly you could get inches from their face. To really take advantage of the marine habitat I would move a little bit away from them, so I could get the coral with the turtle, in the shot. The corals were vibrant in color and complimented the green pigment on the turtle. - [Orange Clownfish In Bubbles](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cfj5/) - Subject Orange Clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual ion strobes, +7 wet lens Dive 15 meters (49 feet at depth) during a day dive Okinawa, Japan is just east of Taiwan. The flight from Tokyo is about three and half hours south. Surrounding the island is a diverse group of smaller islands that are packed with coral and attracts ocean life from all over the pacific. The East China Sea, the west coast of Okinawa, is where I did a lot my diving. The area is covered in coral and in some locations the reef goes for miles. I have seen hard and soft corals that were as big as cars in this area. Clownfish are abundant but well hidden in rock coral formations. You have to look but you will find some on almost every dive. In this image the bubble coral helped the clownfish really pop. Bubble coral will retract at night and can sting if you touch it. The bubble coral is very beautiful and look like little balloons. It makes for a great background for a photo. Sometimes you can see shrimp or crustaceans in this coral. This time I had clownfish in one. You have to be patient when taking photos of clownfish but you also have to be aware of not sitting there all day. Time can slow down when you are trying to get a really good photo. You don’t want the dive group to move on without you. It is not a good feeling when you turn around and you see nothing but water, no divers! You have to have dive partners that care for your well-being and want you to stay with them. Diving with other photographers is best. They usually want to take the same photos and you are diving at the same pace as them. - [Green Sea Turtle In The Soft Corals](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gstp1/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Apo Island, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, dual inon strobes, wide angle lens Dive 5 meters (16 feet at depth) during a day dive Every time, you go to a great dive location, you want to come back because there is something you always miss. I believe this to be especially true for wide angle photography. I wanted to come back to Apo Island to get photos of huge green sea turtles. I made the request for a shallow dive exclusively for the turtles this time to capture some up-close intimate shots. These turtles weigh in at 136 kilograms (300 lbs.) or even more. They can be seen in the coral surrounding the island. The corals can be big as cars. All this hard and soft coral is a refuge for green sea turtles. The coral also acts as a natural filtration system for the ocean, so the water is crystal clear in this area. The bright clear skies penetrate the shallow reefs to give them the necessary light to grow and flourish. These combinations create great opportunities for photos. When the turtles are sleeping or resting in the corals you can get within inches of them for great wide-angle photography. When I was approaching this turtle, I wanted to shoot below him to get the full effect of the reef and the water clarity. The wide-angle dome was able to capture all of this, with only being 6 inches from the turtle. I did not need much of my light coming from the strobes because the maximum depth of the dive was only 15-20 feet (5-7 meters at depth). On this one dive, I was able to encounter ten green sea turtles. The turtles were very cooperative, and I am forever thankful for these opportunities. Because the biodiversity is so intense in these areas, I will keep coming back to get more images and stories. - [Black And White Version Of A Green Sea Turtle](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gstoj/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Kerama Islands, Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 15 meters (45 feet at depth) during a day dive There is a small chain of islands that are off the coast of the Okinawa, Japan. These small islands are surrounded by coral for miles and inhabit an abundance of sea life. Green turtles migrate and live in this area all year round. There are pockets of current that drive nutrients thru the reefs to preserve and keep them healthy. This brings in other life as well. One moment you can have calm seas and another you have a strong current. For the most part, the Kerama Islands are an easy dive, most days. The sea turtle in this photo was coming from one reef to another and was moving at a good speed. It took me by surprise. The turtle came right over me, gliding thru the water. I was looking in the other direction when I saw him out of the corner of my eye. There is so much ocean life in a concentrated area it is sometimes hard to look for a specific thing. I call this looking too hard. Swim slow and look slower and you will find some critters you were not even expecting. Occasionally a sea turtle here and there. I have gotten lucky in the Keramas and seen up to 6 turtles on one dive. If you see one, you can swim a little to them but they swim very fast. There is no point in trying to chase them. There acceleration is incredible and effortless. I would say this turtle was about 2.5 feet wide or less than a meter in length. The opportunity to take photos of green turtles swimming is fleeting but can be rewarding. This one was no exception. I was only able to get this one shot and he was on his way. - [Blue-Ringed Octopus Portrait](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/brop2/) - Subject Blue-Ringed Octopus Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes with red light, +6 wet lens Dive 20 meters (65 feet at depth) during a night dive This Blue Ringed Octopus was the largest I had ever seen. He displayed his colors for almost 40 minutes straight. I was very fortunate to have a dive guide that was skilled to find one and then helped me find him again, when I lost him in the rocks. I lost him because I took my eye off him for about 3 seconds, to look at my previous shots. Not a good feeling when you are in the dark and you lost a blue ringed octopus. This cephalopod has the ability to kill you within 4 minutes if you are bitten. To top that off, the bite can be painless and there is no anti-venom. The solution I have found to getting photos of Blue Ringed Octopus, give them space, take a couple photos slowly and then move away a little. Repeat this pattern and you can have a cooperating partner for several minutes. Be slow and steady and they will get comfortable to degree. Keep eye contact with them. I always found getting your strobes in position while you approach them is best. You don’t want to be fixing your camera set-up and looking at your camera and then lose them. Easier said than done. Blue Ring Octopus are very rare to see and will hide in rocks, never to be seen again, on some night dives. They are truly a diamond in a rough and you want to be ready when you take photos of them. I know because I have learned from my mistakes. My go to wet lens for medium sized ocean dwellers is the +6 wet lens. I will have my strobes at 10 and 2 o’clock positioning in reference to my camera and have a red light on standby. This blue ring was about 4 inches full extended. He was about double the size of the average blue ring that I have seen, it was nice to have him all by myself. - [Octopus Raising His Arm](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/owpb/) - Subject Octopus Location West Palm Beach, Florida Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 10 meters (33 feet at depth) during a day dive The Blue Heron Bridge is considered one of the best, if not the best macro photography site in the USA. The diving is not that deep but the concentration of life is abundant. You do not have to go very far to see a lot in one dive. The dives under the bridge are only to 35 feet but you can stay under for a long time at that depth. I had on a large tank so I was prepared for a two-hour dive. Octopus are always a great find and this one was posing for me. This octopus was as big as a dinner plate. He was in a hole and came out a little to see what was going on. I slowly approached him so he felt comfortable staying in one spot. My goal is to always be as close as possible before taking any photos. With the octopus stationary and settled, I wanted to try to get a slight black background around his body. To do this I need the strobes to bounce light off the water. If the light has nothing to bounce back to, the camera will pick up a black background. I aimed the strobes up slightly towards the water surface. The slight angle was enough. When I take photos of octopus sometimes, I feel like they know what I am doing, and they pose for the camera. Personality to a photo makes it more unique. In this photo, I like that he has just one tenacle up in the air, it brings more attention to him and gives the photo some character. After I took this shot, I turned around not too long after, to head back shore. - [A Pair of Clownfish In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cfj1/) - Subject Pair of Clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes Dive 4 meters (13 feet at depth) during a day dive Clownfish have a tendency to live in pairs. The largest of the pair is the female and smaller partner being the male. If for some reason the female would die, the partner male will turn into a female. In this photo the lovely couple are pairing up for the camera. You can clearly see the larger Tomato Clownfish has darker sides with the male by her side. Once paired they tend to live out their lives together, once they mate. You usually never see no more than two. If you do, you can be assured the smaller ones are all non-mating males. I was able to get a photo of these two because the ocean was very calm and this large anemone, they live in, was near the surface. The light from the surface on a sunny day, helps. You just need the sun to be behind or above you. I have tried to get photos of these specific clownfish before but I felt like I was in a washing machine because the current was tossing me around. Some clownfish are fearless and will come right at your camera. Others do not want anything to do with you. Some you will wait for minutes to come out and nothing. Nevertheless, you have to try. I always tried to approach these guys very carefully. If you sneak up on them too fast or get too close, they will never come out. You figure it out from trial and error. Getting two clownfish to cooperate in one photo takes patience and some luck. The sun was behind me, there was almost no backscatter in the water, and I was fortunate to get these two to pose for a family portrait. - [Polka Dot Nudibranch](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/nudi1/) - Subject Nudibranch Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon camera with dual inon strobes, +12 wet lens Dive 16 meters (52 feet at depth) during a day dive There are over 3000 nudibranchs all over the world. They are only located in saltwater. Most nudibranchs have a tiny shell when they are born, that leaves them, as they start to grow. These soft body sea slugs have great color. A lot of people go to workshops just to take photos of them and talk about them. My first underwater photography workshop was for nudibranchs. I, at the time, was not overly enthusiastic about taking photos of them but I have grown to appreciate their spectacular color and appearance. Most are seen in warm shallow reefs but have been documented at over a mile deep. Some have chemical defenses to aid against predation. They can also lay 2 to 25 million eggs depending on the species. In this photo, this nudibranch was moving slowly against the rocks. I got as close as possible with my wet lens, on the end of the camera, to magnify the rhinophores on the nudibranch’s head. The rhinophores are receptors that help the nudibranch seek out food. With the rhinophores in focus, my next goal was to shoot below the subject. In this case the nudi cooperated and I was able to get a black background. I did this by increasing my shutter speed and adjusting my camera to shoot up towards the water behind him. The shutter speed in a camera acts as a dimmer and with strobes bouncing off the water, with minimal background in the shot, the background becomes black. A black background with a subject with some color, makes the image stand out. For as colorful as nudibranchs are, they can hard to find. I have found that the harder I try to find something, the less likely I will find it. Take what the ocean gives you. If you don’t you could miss out on a lot. - [Green Sea Turtle Rising Out Of The Depths](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gstoj1/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual ion strobes Dive 15 meters (50 feet at depth) during a night dive Green Sea turtles can move and move fast. They look like they are slow but in the open water the turtle’s movement are effortless. In Okinawa, Japan you will see them in areas where large areas of coral reefs meet, a drop off into the ocean. Most of Okinawa is built on volcanic rock and coral reefs so you could say turtles could be anywhere. You never know from dive to dive. I think they feel comfortable on the reef but if they see something they don’t like, they can take off into the open ocean quickly. Sometimes you could get lucky and swim right next to them. I was on a dive in Okinawa where you would see 5 green sea turtles in a concentrate area in strong current the first 10 minutes and then nothing for 40 minutes. You just never know sometimes. This was a shore dive where you had to snorkel out above the reef before you dropped in. The conditions and visibility were perfect. The visibility was 80 feet underwater. The coral acts as a natural filtration system to keep the water clarity, exceptional. I was in a diving party of 5 when I came across this turtle. I was lucky to swim with him. Usually that many divers will deter a turtle from getting close to you. This turtle was not a newborn but was not at full adult size yet. It gave us, the divers, an edge to take advantage of his curiosity. I was able to stay with him for only about 20 seconds and he had enough. When you are in those moments, seconds feel like minutes and they stay with you long after the dive. - [Tomato Clownfish In Bubble Coral In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/tcfj1/) - Subject Tomato Clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera, with dual inon strobes, +7 wet lens Dive 13 meters (42 feet at depth) during a day dive The bubble tip coral around this clownfish makes the colors around the fish more vibrant. You see clownfish in bubble tip coral for a reason. The clownfish and the bubble tip coral work together. The Tomato Clown is able to clean off coral from debris and algae, while the bubble tip provides protection and a sanctuary where the clownfish can thrive. The Tomato can also fight off would be predators, that like to attack the polyps on the coral. This Tomato Clownfish had a tolerance for my camera but would sometimes bump into it, when it felt, I was getting too close. The Tomato Clown would sometimes bury his face into the coral and I would back away. I would slowly work my camera back into position and then I would try to get a couple more shots. Then back away again. I remember even taking photos of some other clownfish in anemones to come back to this Tomato Clown. It was on the third try I was able to take this shot. I can remember times when I was trying to lock on a subject and I would feel something hitting my leg or my dive glove. It would startle me, and I would I get scared, to only find out it was a clownfish reminding me, I was too close to their home. Some clownfish will build up courage to the point they have no fear of you and will let you know they have had enough. They are impressive in color and the anemones that surround them make for a great picture. But there comes a time when they say enough is enough. - [Side Profile Of A Tomato Clownfish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/tcfj2/) - Subject Tomato Clownfish Location Kerama Islands, Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes, +7 wet lens Dive 14 meters (46 feet in depth) during a day dive The Kerama Islands are 20 miles off the coast of Okinawa. They are small patch of islands that are surrounded by miles of coral reefs. They make for great diving when there are no storms brewing in the Pacific. Because of the chance of typhoons and limited boats going out, you typically book in advance. Hope for the best and reschedule if the storms come. The boat typically leaves the dock around 8 am and by mid-morning you are in the water. On this dive, the wake was minimal and the boat ride out was smooth sailing. I remember the water being crystal clear, with reefs surrounding you for miles. When you are diving in an area that this so concentrated with coral it is easy to let things in the water pass you buy. All the ocean life blends very well into the coral. The sea anemones with clownfish in them are no exception. I would try to hover next to the reef as much as possible so I could see the subtle differences in the rock that would show an anemone, eel or even a turtle hiding. This anemone was well hidden in the coral, and you had to twist your body around some large rocks to get to it. The tomato clownfish was out and about for a few pictures then would hide into the rocks. I had to come from the other side of reef for the clownfish to feel comfortable enough to pose for any pictures. Luckily this clownfish was right below the boat so I could go back to him at the end of the dive. - [Green Sea Turtles Underneath The Boat](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gstp2/) - Subject Green Sea Turtles Location Apo Island, Dumaguete, Philippines Equipment Canon camera, with dual inon strobes, wide angle lens Dive 7 meters (23 feet at depth) during a day dive I really wanted to get in some specific dives with green sea turtles. I was at Apo Island earlier in the week and I only saw one or two. I felt I could do better so I wanted to plan a shallow dive, just for green sea turtles. The boat was all set up two days later. It was just a 30-minute boat ride and the seas were flat. The boat had plenty of room with only a few passengers. Once we anchored, inhabitants from the island would come by in tiny boats and try to sell me t-shirts or scarfs. I didn’t mind. They were good quality and everyone was very nice. Once we got our gear set up, we jumped in and they handed me my camera. We decided to circle the shallow part of the reef in a clockwise fashion. I didn’t want to miss a turtle so I made sure my dive guide pointed all of them out to me. As we came around closer to the boat as we finished the dive, there were turtles everywhere. At one point I had 6 turtles swimming around me. The guide just laughed because they were just everywhere. Huge green sea turtles in soft coral for miles. I would lock on a turtle to get the best photo possible and then I would be startled by another huge turtle swimming right by my head. This turtle in this photo just glided past me. After he made his inspection of my camera, we ascended to the boat to head back and gear up for the night. The shallow dives paid off with moments and photos that met my expectations. - [Glowing Bobtail Squid In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bsoj2/) - Subject Bobtail Squid Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera dual ion strobes with red light, +12 wet lens Dive 7 meters (23 feet at depth) during a night dive During the day there was a pathway of dark blue water you could see from my house. I called it pufferfish lane. Pufferfish would sleep in this waterway during low tide. At night, if the water was calm, you could see references or landmarks to pufferfish lane. Right before I would go down this canal, there was a sandy bottom where bobtail squid would always be later on in the night. So, I would look carefully on the way out for them. Sometimes I would not see them on the way out, but I knew I could see them on the way back in. This was one of those nights. I was just finishing off a really great dive and I found the sandy bottom right before the water got really shallow. I was looking to my right and saw this dark blue blob in the water and instantly knew it was my Bobtail Squid. This Bobtail squid was showing some really bright colors and was just sitting on top of the sand. I had to move in close and was really slow in my approach. I knew if I moved too fast, he would be in the sand and all the color of this photo would be lost. I got lucky that he stayed out as long as he did, and I really liked how powerful and bright the colors came out in this image. Bobtail squid photographs are usually taken in the shallows. The deepest I have seen a bobtail was about 45 feet deep. But most, like this one, are no deeper than 30 feet in the sand. This bobtail squid was very large. He was almost an inch (2.54 cm) long. - [Bobtail Squid In Okinawa, Japan Under The Lights](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bsoj3/) - Subject Bobtail Squid Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with Dual Inon Strobes with red light, +12 wet lens Dive 9 meters (30 feet at depth) during a night dive The Bobtail Squid is my favorite animal to take photos of. They are usually the size of a dime (an American 10 cent coin) and can get as big as a nickel (an American 5 cent coin). I have seen them smaller than a tip of an eraser on a pencil. The colors they display are spectacular and range from dark blues to silver. They have chubby little bodies with little, tiny arms. These little guys like to bury in the sand, so you have to limit the amount of light you put on them. They are nocturnal. So, to summarize, they come out at dark, are very tiny and tolerate very little light or they disappear in the sand. To get a good photo, you have to swim very slow to build up their trust. Then limit the white light you have on them to only spot them and then go, right to red light. The red light allows you to get crazy close without scaring them off. The ideal photo is right before they bury into the sand, and they are just gently touching the surface. This bobtail was behaving very nicely, and I was able to play around with the lighting so the strobes where just hovering over him. Normally you just take what you can, and they are gone in the sand. But once in a while you get one to pose for you and that is when you have to be ready. Once a subject is in focus, the most important thing is lighting. Positioning strobes in different positions can completely change the photo. This bobtail stayed still, showed great color and allowed me to get inches from his face. - [Bobtail Squid With A Skeleton Shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bsoj4/) - Subject Bobtail Squid with Skeleton Shrimp Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with Dual Inon Strobes with red light, +23 wet lens Dive 8 meters (25 feet at depth) during a night dive Sometimes the best stuff is right at the beginning of the dive. This was no exception. The bobtails were out in full force and this one was huge!!! Maybe the size of nickel, an American 5 cent coin. I was able to put on my biggest wet lens I have. The +23 wet lens, that weighs in at one pound. The image was magnified 23 times and to my surprise a shrimp was posing for me as well. Skeleton shrimps are very small and can be overlooked when taking images. In this case he or she, wanted to be a part of the action. The colors on this bobtail, were on full display and I was less than half an inch from his face. My dive partner and I would always walk down some steps slowly, put our fins on in between the little waves and float across a reef. At the end of the reef, is where there was a drop off spot where a ton of cephalopods congregated almost every night. As soon as we descended almost instantly, there he was. The night was just beginning but this bobtail was out ready to go. I took several shots fast because I knew this was the beginning of the dive and I didn’t want my dive partner waiting. He knew I would be there for a while, so he circled back after a while to get me to explore other parts of dive site. This dive location was one of my favorites because we could see blue ring octopus, bobtail squid, Japanese reef squid, flamboyant cuttlefish and many other cephalopods in a concentrated area. Not to mention, you could also hear Humpback whales in the winter, singing at night. - [Clownfish With A Little Baby](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cfj3/) - Subject Clownfish with a baby Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera, dual ion strobes Dive 9 meters (30 feet at depth) during a day dive Once in a while you take a photo, and you get a surprise when looking back at the images. This was no exception. A little baby clownfish with her mom. I normally take a couple of shots of this clownfish in hopes of getting one or two to come out. This anemone and clownfish were landmarks for me so I would not have to look at my dive compass. There are always reference points and landmarks underwater you identify with when you are diving the same spot over and over again. I liked venturing out to new areas but always came back to familiar ones. This anemone and clownfish were a great landmark. I knew I was almost done with my dive once I got to her. When I was taking this image, the clownfish was in and out of the anemone moving rather quickly, more than usual. I know realize she was probably uncomfortable with me being there with a little one around. If you read up on clownfish breeding, they say they do not rear their young. With this little one around, maybe he was the exception to the rule. Only later when I was looking back on images in the computer, did I notice that there was a little baby checking me out as well. Sometimes the best stuff happens on accident when you don’t expect it, when taking photos underwater. Photography is just part of the equation when underwater. When diving you have to factor more than just the camera. You are breathing underwater with equipment. You have to factor in your air consumption and your bottom time. You can always come back another day. In the hundreds and hundreds of dives that I took photos underwater, getting images of little clownfish babies only happened to me twice. Baby clownfish at that size are difficult to get an image of. Best to leave it to chance. - [Porcelain Crab In The Anemone](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/pcap/) - Subject Porcelain Crab Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, dual inon strobes, +7 wet lens Dive 18 meters (59 feet at depth) during a day dive When I am coming up on anemones, I am always looking for crabs, shrimps or clownfish to compliment the shot. You have to take what nature gives you. I was fortunate that this crab was sitting right in the middle of the anemone. Getting partial shots or angle shots are typical but not ideal. These guys have a tendency to be hidden on the side or underneath the anemone. I was the first camera to come up on the porcelain crab, so he wasn’t agitated or restless. The crab was just settled in, relaxing. I tried to move in as slowly as I could to get a couple close up shots and then move on with the group. The wet lens helps with magnification, but you have to have a much closer working distance to the subject to maximize clarity. The strobes were set in a manual setting which gives the image softer, more natural light. This helps prevent the image from being over exposed, while still showing off lighter colors. The porcelain crab has a symbiotic relationship with the anemone. A porcelain crab protects anemones from invaders and the mucus from the anemone gives the crab the nutrients it needs. These mutualist characteristics promote a long-standing relationship where they live in harmony for a long time. Porcelain crabs and the anemone fortunately together can show some good colors in their pictures, too. This was the first and last time I saw a porcelain crab just sitting in the middle of the anemone. I feel very fortunate to get this photo. I think this porcelain crab was less than 2 inches in width and as you can see looks to be in great health. - [Orange Bobtail Squid In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bsoj5/) - Subject Bobtail Squid Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera dual inon strobes with red light, +23 wet lens Dive 12 meters (40 feet at depth) during a night dive When I would be diving in Okinawa, seeing a large blue bobtail was very exciting. But you don’t see too many larger sized Orange Bobtail Squids. I mean this one was bigger than a dime (an American ten cent coin)! So, when this one was spotted it was very exciting. You want to be ready and take a couple of fast shots with bobtails because you never know when they will bury themselves in the sand. The shell in the front of this beauty was on accident but was a nice touch as an accent piece. I didn’t even notice the shell until I was on the computer a couple weeks later looking at images. Seeing the pieces of sand at magnification, shows how small these guys really are. On night dives you really don’t go that deep so you can be out in the water for 2 hours plus. Even with a wetsuit you can get cold for that long period of time. I remember this image was right before I was going to turn around and head back, so I had to keep looking at my gauges, so I didn’t run out of air. I remember a photographer telling me once, you don’t need to take a lot of shots, but you just need that one. I also remember an underwater photographer telling me, if you think you have a good shot, take two more. On all dives you have be conscience of how much air you have left. When you are in the zone taking photos of something really rare, time and space seem to slow down. Before you know it, you have been on a subject for 20 minutes and you don’t even realize it. - [Green Sea Turtle Up Close In Dumaguete, Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/gspt3/) - Subject Green Sea Turtle Location Dumaguete, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera with Focus light Dive 22 meters (72 feet at depth) during a day dive The boat was docked along a huge wall of coral. The dive really had no expectations. Just take what nature gives you. You would love to see a green turtle up close but you never know when that opportunity will come. On this dive, you could see cuttlefish, schools of squid and even bubbles coming up from the substrate. The sand was warm from volcanic activity deep in the ocean floor. Then in the distance I could see a turtle laying in the sand. I slowly approached him. I did not see any movement. I wanted to get closer but was worried I would scare him off and then I would get no photos at all. I would get closer and then finally I was able to get right next to him on the bottom of the ocean. A lot of dive guides in the area thought he was about to pass away. He had a lot of sand on him and was not moving at all. The boats were starting to move above us and the engines started to kick on, this sparked the turtle to raise his head. At this moment I was able to get my focus light to shine down on his head and I was able to get my camera as close as I could with hitting him. I did not want to invade his space but wanted to get a picture of his eye before I had to go. Getting up close to them to see into their eyes is something you never forget. Shortly after he put his head down and I had to go. The encounter had to end but the moment stays with you. - [A Light-Colored Blue-Ringed Octopus Located In Okinawa, Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bro2/) - Subject Blue-Ringed Octopus Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera dual inon strobes with red light, +6 wet lens Dive 13 meters (43 feet at depth) during a night dive Blue-ringed Octopus can have a lot of different colors. Sometimes they will have dull blue rings and hardly any color at all. Other times they will have dark blue rings, and orange texture to their skin. This one had light texture of blue rings and an off white that was a little different than what, I am accustomed to shooting. I remember the octopus moving around and then for brief moment he paused. It was at that moment I felt he was almost comfortable to pose for a photo. It was not for long but I was able to get a few shots and then he was on his way. I was shooting with manual light in the lowest setting in the camera. This allowed the image to not be blown out by the strobes but still get the natural light the octopus had. I had red light on him so I could see him in the dark and get very close. The strobes overpowered the red light, so they did not show in the picture. The wet lens I used was a thick piece of class. Each of my wet lenses has a magnetic attachment. The front of my camera also had a magnet ring so I could switch between wet lens quickly if I wanted to. This was a huge time saver. Screwing in wet lenses on and off not only takes time but the salt in the water sometimes causes the lens to stick in the 67m thread of the camera housing. When I was shooting this blue ring, I had my camera set up for a lower ISO. The camera was so close I did not need extra brightness in the image. - [Peacock Mantis Shrimp In Anilao, Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/mep1/) - Subject Peacock Mantis Shrimp Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera, dual ion strobes, +12 wet lens Dive 17 meters (55 feet at depth) during a day dive Peacock mantis shrimp have tremendous color and are extremely strong, with great vision and speed. The agility of this shrimp is incredibly fast. They can move from one side of the reef to other in a matter of seconds. The appendages of the shrimp, that help them catch prey have been clocked to move at 50 miles per hour (80 km/h). Their vision is the most impressive characteristic. The Peacock Mantis Shrimp has over 15 photoreceptors in their eyes. This allows them to see UV, polarized and visible light. This peacock mantis was just coming out of a hole, when I stumbled across him. I was looking at something else and I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. His eyes were right next to my camera and I could not resist. As I focused the camera, he would move a little closer and for those brief moments those eyes just popped out of the blackness. I was working with my +12 wet lens so the working distance between the camera and the subject was extremely close. I put focus on the eyes of the shrimp. This helped create depth to the image and showcased the eyes. The body of the Mantis provided the background for the image. This helped create some depth to the macro image. The mantis was no longer than 3 inches in length. After I took a couple shots he went right back in the hole. He thought about coming out again but he stayed there and I continued on with the dive. I only had a few minutes left so it was a good conclusion to a macro photography shoot in Anilao. - [Orange Frogfish In Anilao, Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ffp1/) - Subject Frogfish Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera dual inon strobes Dive 16 meters (52 feet at depth) during a day dive Frogfish are one of my favorite subjects to take photos of. They are a type of angler fish. They can look like stone, coral, or sponges. Sometimes having algae on them or hydrozoa. Like other angler fish they have a modified dorsal fin spine on their head that acts as a fishing lure to attract food. They blend in so well into the environment, the only thing the prey sees is the lure. Frogfish can catch something in their mouth within 6 milliseconds. Other than opening their mouth to catch prey, they move pretty slow. A lot of times, they are motionless. When taking photos of them, sometimes they will yawn, protruding out their very large mouths. This is a sign they have had enough of you being around. During mating, males are best to leave the females alone after conception. Females have been known to eat males after fertilization if they don’t let them be. Overall, they enjoy posing for the camera and blend in very well into the environment so you have to look carefully for them. There is a lot that is not known about Frogfish. How do they know they have to change colors and when? Nevertheless, I appreciate them and think their techniques for survival and adaptation are amazing. This frogfish was showing great color and was completely motionless. I approached him trying to get the camera right up to his body so the strobes could give off some unique lighting effects. I slightly turned the strobes out so only part of light would hit the subject. This caused the image to have a combination of lighter and darker images. I think it helped create depth to the colors of this frogfish. - [Pom Pom Crab On The Hard Coral](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/ppc1/) - Subject Pom Pom Crab Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes, +6 wet lens Dive 5 meter (16 feet at depth) during a day dive The Pom Pom Crab gets its name from clipping off pieces of an anemone and attaching them to each of its claws. These acted as defense mechanisms from predators and help collect food. The anemone on the pom pom crab has been documented to grow asexually by fission. This crab was on the move and was difficult to get photos of. They really like to hide under rocks and other debris. The crab was only one inch in width and a half an inch in height. To get photos of something so small that is moving is tough. Especially when you are using a wet lens. A good quality wet lens will be a thick piece of glass that will keep the image clear. The trick is, when using a wet lens you have move closer to the subject. This is called closing down the working distance. The bigger the magnification, the smaller the working distance you have. This makes it difficult to shoot if the subject is moving. I have several wet lenses I use on a macro dive. They range in magnification from +6, +7, +12, +13 and +23. Anything above a +6 the subject cannot be moving at all. Luckily the pom pom crab decided to stay still for a couple seconds and I was able to get some quick shots. The coral it was on, made for a great background. For only being with the crab for a couple seconds I was pleased with the results. I have seen pom pom crabs in Anilao, Bali and in Okinawa. In each location, I have only seen them once. They are rare to get a glimpse of but appreciated when seen. - [Pygmy Seahorse Blending In With A Sea Fan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/psp1/) - Subject Pygmy Seahorse Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon camera with dual inon strobes, +12 wet lens Dive 15 meters (about 50 feet at depth) during a day dive The Pygmy Seahorse is the smallest Seahorse in the world. It reaches 1 inch (2.54 cm) in length. This one was a little short of that length. They have a tendency to look away from the camera and hide in the gorgonians (also known as sea fans). In order to fill the picture frame with a pygmy you have to be extremely close. It was not uncommon for me to take 20 photos and not one, was looking at the camera. To get the shot you want, you sometimes have to spend an entire dive to seek them out. To make the photography even more difficult, diving with these little seahorses usually takes you down to almost 30 meters (98 feet). You don’t have much time at that depth to take many photos. So, when I found this little guy at 50 feet with the help of my guide, I was pleasantly surprised. I went back to this spot on another dive to just take photos of the Pygmy Seahorses and it paid off. Patience and coming back multiple times, is best practice, when you trying to get a good shot. Originally, I thought this image did not come out but after looking back at my trip I was pleasantly surprised. In one sea fan you can sometimes see multiple seahorses. Sea fans themselves are living beings. A sea fan is a collection of animals that are called polyps. The pygmy seahorse mimics the polyp texture almost making it impossible to see. This is done by the seahorse’s nervous system and chemical structure. Pygmy Seahorses have been known to change color to camouflage to a new sea fan. - [A Blue-Ringed Octopus In Anilao, Philippines Walking Away](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/brop1/) - Subject Blue-Ringed Octopus Location Anilao, Philippines Equipment Canon Camera with dual inon strobes with red light, +6 wet lens Dive 20 meters (60 feet at depth) during a night dive Anilao is two and half hours south of Manila. You know you are close to water when you start twisting and turning thru the windy roads. The resorts are literally on cliffs so you are right on the water. The diving is great because the area is protected from a lot of the elements. It has pockets of current that bring in nutrients and sun, that help establish high amounts of biodiversity. The colors of the reef and the ocean dwelling animals are full of rich complexions. Making it a must dive spot for any photographer. I remember this photo very well because this was the last dive of a ten-day trip. Some dives early on in the trip were hit or miss but as the week went on, the diving got better. A lot of divers were tired and justifiably so. We were diving 4 dives a day for over a week straight. Even with staff helping us on the boats, gear and food, it was a full-time job to get setup and dive. It never felt like a job because everyone that was there loved what they were doing. But nonetheless, I was the only one that opted for the night dive on the last day. My dive guide was extremely patient with me. He had some intel that suggested we try an area, where they had spotted a blue ring, just a day prior. The tip paid off and with the skill of my guide finding this beautiful cephalopod, I was able to spent 40 minutes at 60 feet with this blue ring octopus. This octopus displayed great colors the entire time, capping off a great trip. - [A Blue-Ringed Octopus Walking Down](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bro1/) - Subject Blue-Ringed Octopus Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera with Inon Dual Strobes with red light, +6 wet lens Dive 8 meters (24 feet at depth) during a night dive In Okinawa, Blue Ring Octopus mating season is in June through July of every year. Some weeks will fluctuate but when they come out, you can sometimes see 7-8 in one dive. In my experience the Blue Rings in Okinawa, Japan are smaller than in the Philippines but numbers are much higher in Okinawa. The key to getting this Octopus to cooperate with the camera is to put red light on them. White light will cause the blue ring to hide almost instantly but the red light is darker and they feel more comfortable with it. The strobes attached to the camera will over power the red light so you do not see it in the picture. The flash is only for a split second. For clarity, you have to get very close to the Octopus. When they show their rings, they are warning you to stay away. It is a dual edge sword. You want the rings to flare out for the picture but don’t want the Blue Ring Octopus to get overstressed. They can kill you with one painless bite within minutes. There is no anti-venom either, so being careful with these delicate creatures is an understatement. In this photo it was great to see some dark yellow with the rings. Ideally you want the octopus to move slowly so you know they feel comfortable and you can keep up with where they are, in the water. There is nothing more frightening that losing a blue ring at night. You start to wonder if they are on you. This one cooperated with the camera and took a little walk changing some colors. After a few shots he was on his way. - [Bobtail Squid In Full Extension](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/bsoj1/) - Subject Bobtail Squid Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera, +12 Wet lens, dual inon strobes with red light Dive 5 meters (15 feet at depth) during a night dive The closest relative to the bobtail squid is the cuttlefish. Cuttlefish are much bigger and can be seen during the day and at night. Bobtail squid are nocturnal and usually the size of a penny (one cent American coin) or smaller. They are challenging to get photos of when they are on the sandy bottom. To get a photo of a bobtail swimming is even more difficult. They do not want to sit still until they are on the ocean floor. To take a photo of a bobtail you have to almost always use a wet lens. A wet lens is like a magnifying class you put in front your camera to magnify the image. They come in all different shapes and magnifications but you have to be very close to your subjects to get a clear photo. The higher the magnification, the closer you have to be to the subject. So, to get to a swimming bobtail with a wet lens takes some luck with trial and error. I was fortunate to get this one. This bobtail squid was identified as a male from a biologist in Okinawa by the shortened length of one his tenacles. I took about 10 shots of him swimming and this was the best one I got. I was coming up from a 2 -hour night dive so I was cold but happy to see him. They enjoy swimming in the shallow waters of Okinawa and if you look closely, you will see them all around you on some dives. They will sometimes bury themselves in the sand so it is just best to keep moving along. You will eventually find one posing for you. - [Two Clownfish In A Green Anemone](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/tcoj/) - Subject Two clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon camera, dual inon strobes Dive 17 meters (55 feet at depth) during a day dive When you dive in the same place more than once you can count on certain things being in one location for a while. On this dive I was going to a marine sanctuary not far from where I lived. The drive was around 10 minutes. I would be in the water in another 10 minutes after I parked. Twenty minutes and go, fast but efficient is the motto. If you go too fast and you forgot something, the drive was not that long to go get it and come back. And yes, that did happen on occasion. I wanted to dive to the right of the channel crevice, this time. I was noticing that I was missing out on some anemones that I was overlooking on previous dives, due to being at a shallower depth. To my surprise there was a green anemone, closer to 60 feet (18 meters at depth). Green anemones with clownfish are very nice pictures but are rare finds. Getting two in the frame, with clear water, is a lot of luck. At a deeper depth, I noticed I was seeing some images that I would not normally see. Then coming back, you would lock your eyes on other items. I decided that I would try to dive at this depth for a while when I went back to this dive spot. These clownfish seemed always happy to see me. I never wanted to burn through too much air starting a dive, so I tried to just take a couple shots of these two. I was fortunate that this one came out as clear as it did. Sometimes just changing a couple of meters of depth, can make the same dive spot completely different. - [Close-Up of A Clownfish In Okinawa Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product/cfj2/) - Subject Clownfish Location Okinawa, Japan Equipment Canon Camera, dual inon strobes, +7 wet lens Dive 10 meters (30 feet at depth) during a day dive When I was starting to get comfortable with diving, I was fortunate to be living on a tropical island, surrounded by volcanic rock. This rock helped cultivate hundreds of miles of coral reefs. Not a bad to place, to get acquainted with the underwater locals. The inlet area across from street from where I lived had dramatic high and low tides. When it was low tide, I would have to walk 50 yards before I got my feet wet. I would start to swim in a crevice that would descend from five feet and then drop off to 30 feet. I called this crevice, pufferfish lane. Pufferfish would sit in this area all the time sleeping on the bottom but only during low tide. As I swam passed pufferfish lane, a coral reef would be to my right. When I built up my courage to swim a little further out, I noticed there was other rock formations out there, beyond the huge coral. I swam out there one day, beyond where I normally go and to my surprise around the corner, there was an anemone with an orange clownfish. When I first saw the anemone with the clownfish, I was shocked it was there. It was hidden and doubt that this clownfish had ever seen a diver before. The anemone was tucked away from the current and elements so after every typhoon I would check on this area. It was always in good shape. I was able to get so close to the clownfish that she almost kissed the front end of the camera. When I would go diving off that spot, I always swam by to check out how she was doing. She was always very photogenic. ## Categories - [Uncategorized](https://kidstonphotography.com/category/uncategorized/) ## Product categories - [Uncategorized](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-category/uncategorized/) - [Underwater Ocean Life](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-category/underwater-ocean-life/) ## Product tags - [Philippines](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/philippines/) - [Sea Lion](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/sea-lion/) - [Australia](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/australia/) - [Octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/octopus/) - [Japan](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/japan/) - [Green Sea Turtle](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/green-sea-turtle/) - [Bobtail Squid](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/bobtail-squid/) - [Blue-Ringed Octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/blue-ringed-octopus/) - [Gray Angel Fish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/gray-angel-fish/) - [Florida](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/florida/) - [west palm beach](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/west-palm-beach/) - [Clownfish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/clownfish/) - [Nudibranch](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/nudibranch/) - [Spotted Octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/spotted-octopus/) - [Tomato Clownfish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/tomato-clownfish/) - [Green Sea Turtles](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/green-sea-turtles/) - [cuttlefish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/cuttlefish/) - [moray eel](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/moray-eel/) - [cleaner shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/cleaner-shrimp/) - [porcelain crab](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/porcelain-crab/) - [anilao](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/anilao/) - [Okinawa](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/okinawa/) - [flamboyant cuttlefish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/flamboyant-cuttlefish/) - [sexy shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/sexy-shrimp/) - [reef squid](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/reef-squid/) - [manatee](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/manatee/) - [peacock mantis shrimp](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/peacock-mantis-shrimp/) - [coconut octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/coconut-octopus/) - [Caribbean reef octopus](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/caribbean-reef-octopus/) - [frogfish](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/frogfish/) - [Pom Pom Crab](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/pom-pom-crab/) - [Pygmy Seahorse](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/pygmy-seahorse/) - [goby](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/goby/) - [green moray eel](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/green-moray-eel/) - [Bali](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/bali/) - [grouper](https://kidstonphotography.com/product-tag/grouper/)
